Winter Skincare 101: How to Keep Your Skin Soft & Hydrated All Season

The moment the temperature drops, your skin knows it. Tightness, flakiness, dullness — winter has a way of stripping away moisture fast. The good news? A few simple adjustments to your routine can make a huge difference. Here's how to keep your skin soft, hydrated, and glowing from November through the new year.

Why Winter Is Harder on Your Skin

Cold air holds less moisture than warm air, which means the environment is literally pulling hydration out of your skin all day. Add indoor heating to the mix — which dries the air even further — and your skin's natural moisture barrier takes a real hit. The result: dryness, irritation, and that uncomfortable tight feeling that sets in by mid-afternoon.

The fix isn't complicated, but it does require being a little more intentional about what you put on your skin and when.

Step 1: Exfoliate First

It might seem counterintuitive to scrub dry skin, but gentle exfoliation can be one optional step in winter skincare. Dry winter skin may feel rough or flaky, but exfoliating too often can make irritation worse. A gentle sugar scrub occasionally can smooth rough areas if your skin tolerates it; avoid scrubbing irritated skin.

Look for a scrub with nourishing ingredients like shea butter or cocoa butter built in — so you're softening and moisturizing at the same time, not just stripping.

Step 2: Lock In Moisture Right After Your Shower

This is the most important timing tip in winter skincare: moisturize within a minute or two of getting out of the shower, while your skin is still slightly damp. That surface moisture is what you want to seal in — and a body oil or rich body lotion applied at this moment is a helpful way to reduce moisture loss.

Body oil is especially powerful in winter. Because it's lipid-based, it creates a barrier that slows moisture loss throughout the day — exactly what cold, dry air is trying to cause. If you've never tried body oil in your winter routine, this is the season to start.

Step 3: Don't Skip the Bath

A warm (not hot — hot water strips oils) bath with mineral bath salts or a bath bomb is one of the best things you can do for dry winter skin. Bath salts can make a soak feel pleasant, though they do not draw toxins out of skin, and many bath bombs are formulated with moisturizing oils that leave your skin feeling silky even before you apply lotion.

It's also just a genuinely good way to warm up and decompress during the busy holiday season.

Step 4: Bring the Moisture Indoors

Your skincare routine doesn't stop at your bathroom door. Candles and room sprays won't add humidity to the air, but they do create an atmosphere that makes your self-care routine feel intentional and restorative — which matters more than people give it credit for during a stressful holiday season. If you want to actually add moisture to the air, pair your routine with a humidifier in your bedroom.

Step 5: Upgrade Your Shower with Aromatherapy

Winter mornings are hard. A shower steamer with peppermint or eucalyptus can make getting up and going feel a lot more manageable — the steam activates the essential oils and fills your shower with an invigorating, spa-like scent. It's a small upgrade with a surprisingly big impact on how you start your day.

The Winter Skincare Routine, Simplified

  1. As tolerated: Gently exfoliate rough areas, avoiding irritated skin
  2. Daily: Warm (not hot) shower or bath; add bath salts or a bath bomb for extra skin benefits
  3. Immediately after: Apply body oil or body lotion to slightly damp skin
  4. As needed: Bar soap with moisturizing ingredients (coconut oil, shea butter) instead of drying conventional soap
  5. Morning boost: Shower steamer for an aromatherapy lift to start the day
